Weekly Update 8/21/17

Attention:

Tonight's (Monday, Aug 21st) evening marching band practice and ice cream social will now be held on our regular school practice field.  The Varsity Field was just sprayed for insects and we will not be permitted on it for a few days. We were just notified of this an hour ago! Everything else stays the same;  Drum Line and Pit rehearsal AT 5:45 PM (that means to show up at 5:30 PM!)  with the rest of the band on the field by 6:15 PM.  MONDAY NIGHT PRACTICES ARE ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY!  If anyone has a game or scrimmage they need to "e-mail" Mr. D. by the end of the school day.

See ya tonight!

Middle School Bands:

We're off to a super start! By now, all students should have been assigned a band room locker in which to keep their instrument, and have brought home the Instrumental Music / Band Handbook along with the returnable parent sign-off sheet.  The sign-off sheet is due by this Friday, Aug. 25th for a 10 point grade.

"New" Band Students, that is, those who have just signed up to start an instrument in the 6th grade band, should be in the process of obtaining their instruments through Pellegrino Music ( our supplier out of Canton) or Music and Arts on Main St. in Westerville.  Students are given two (2) weeks to obtain an instrument as lessons will begin next week.  After the two week period they will need to be marked as unprepared unless we hear from their parents concerning such.  The band office phone # is 740-625-6055  ext. 2185

6th Grade Instrumental Lesson Rotation:

Band students in the 6th grade band receive  group music lessons on a 7-day rotation during the period 3 intervention time slot.  The rotation means that students will only miss any given intervention period 1.3 times per marking period.  "If" an intervention period teacher feels that any given student needs to remain in an intervention class due to needing extra help or to make up missing classwork he/she will notify the band director of such.  Students who attend music lessons need to touch base with their intervention teacher to see if they missed any work, but also need to check-in with the band director to be sure they have the exercise assignment for the next lesson.  Band students, in addition to their band music, are graded on 2 book exercises per week.  Those exercises are individually practiced throughout the week and performed in lessons (or sometimes other times) for a 10 pt. grade each week.

Music Booster Form:  A form was recently sent home with all music students in grades 6-12 asking for parent participation and support throughout the school year.  The Msuic Boosters fundraise and support ALL the music groups in ALL grades in Centerburg.  Please complete and return the form!  We're sure you have some sort of expertise or talent that can be utilized for the good of the students!

Parent "Music" Volunteers:  are needed for ALL band classes!  Did you play an instrument in high school or college and are still pretty good?  If so we need you to help students on a one-on-one basis, run small group sectionals and assist with some clerical work.  All volunteers must have an FBI background check ( available at the Knox County Education Center in Mt. Vernon) before being permitted to work with students in this capacity.  Call the band office at 740-625-6055  ext. 2185 or shoot an e-mail to chuck.dettmar@centerburgschools.org.
