Senior Show Update:

What will we put on the field for Friday night? First, let me tell everyone how the design of a student show goes... First, you sit and share ideas Then you design a show that is attainable by the average marcher Then you look at how much you will able to accomplish in each and every practice based on the fact that the majority of the band members have practiced their music and are prepared with their music and lyres on the field. Finally, as you are practicing you determine how much time you have left, the "quality" of what is already learned, and how much more is able to be added without weakening what already exists.  So... With that said, I'd like to work during period 2 with the 8th graders and period 9 with the H.S. on both Thursday and Friday in order to strengthen the music and individual parts, and then go out to the field during both period 9 and after school on Friday and see if we can't add the rest of the moves the seniors designed! AND... Even

Thank you!

As we, the directors, reflect on the New Jersey trip, we are overflowing with joy and pride in our students. Their performances were all beyond what we imagined, and their attitudes were stellar during the entire trip.  We received compliments from every place we visited, from schools to hotels,  on how respectful and well behaved our students were. You could see on their faces and in the way they presented themselves that our students were brimming with pride in themselves and their peers.  When taking 125 people on buses to anywhere for 4 days it is impossible for everything to go as planned.  Flexibility is obviously a must as there are certain areas the group leaders have no control over. We felt that the students showed tremendous maturity when faced with an alternate plan or a change of any sort. Their flexibility and ability to “improvise” made us proud. Some great things can occur serendipitously. One example of this is when we missed the ferry from Ellis Island to the S

What a day!!

Today was a GREAT day!! Our exchange concerts were excellent and it was so amazing to see the look of pride on the students faces as they performed for each school.  We enjoyed pizza from Mr. Dettmar's favorite pizza shop, Alfonso's, for lunch. The students were able to eat outside on the campus of Scotch Plains High School.  After the concerts and an awesome drum battle, went and loaded the busses for the mall. All of the students had dinner and shopped till they dropped! We have gotten many compliments from the schools, bus drivers and hotel staff on our kids and their behavior. They have been respectful and well behaved everywhere we have visited.  The directors and chaperones were blown away by the performances today!!  Tomorrow, we plan to leave the hotel at 8 and we are looking at an appropriate arrival time between 5 and 7pm. We will post an update when we are getting close.

New Jersey Day 3!

New Jersey Day 3: Today we head to Dunellen High School, where Mr. Dettmar used to teach, for the Choir exchange concert. Then, we head to Scotch Plains High School for the band exchange concert.  We will enjoy some pizza for lunch at Scotch Plains, provided by the Centerburg Music Boosters before our concert. Due to the windy conditions on the beach, we have made plans to take the students to a local mall where they will get time to eat dinner and enjoy some downtime before we head back to our hotel for the night. Your children are true delights! They have been such troopers through everything and we have so enjoyed sharing this opportunity with them. Looking forward to another milestone day today!

New Jersey Update

New Jersey update:  The hotel that we were planning on staying in tonight had some flooding damage from the storm and also had other issues that upon inspection by directors and chaperones was found to be unacceptable.  Lodging has been moved to the Best Western in Lakewood New Jersey. The kids are in good spirits and had a wonderful time at Liberty State Park. We spent the afternoon at the boardwalk watching the surf and eating giant slices of pizza! Thank you for your patience with our updates!

Trip update: Sunday, Oct. 4th...

Congratulations Trojan Pride Band... Last evening the Trojan Pride Band came in 2nd place with an overall score of 81.5 in the group 4 competition!  Nice going band! We had a rough start yesterday due to a couple of bad tires and a faulty windshield wiper on the 3rd bus.    We were sure to have those items addressed and fixed and got on our way a couple of hours late.  The matter will be addressed with the bus company when we return to Centerburg.  Everyone is safe and sound!!!  No worries! TODAY:  We are currently having breakfast and packing for our trip to the Statue of Liberty.  Winds are down on the coast to around 10-15 miles per hour  (and dropping) and temperatures will be in the low 60's today so we should have a really nice day!  Areas we are visiting are in no kind of coastal flooding threat! Note:   While we understand that students, parents and staff were less than enthralled about the bus situation yesterday, we ask that you please let the music staff and adm

NJ Trip Update - Friday Morning - 8:30 AM

Hurricane going out to the Atlantic - No Immediate Threat - Trip is a go as planned ! #1   Forecast for Sat., Oct. 3rd  (competition):  Cloudy and breezy.  Around 50 degrees. #2   Forecast for Sun. Oct. 4th ( Statue of Liberty ):  Overcast in the low to mid 60's.  Same forecast for Point Pleasant Beach in the afternoon! #3   Forecast for Mon. Oct 5th :  Some clouds - in the low to mid 60's - possible shower. Note:   I will be speaking to the folks in Point Pleasant Beach to see if businesses on the boardwalk will be open.  My only concern at this point is that maybe, because an impending hurricane was on the horizon, businesses have boarded up and run for the hills.  If that is the case there would be very little for 107 teenagers to do!  Once I speak to both the Pt. Pleasant Police and the Jenkinson's boardwalk owners I will update this blog.   Please check back this afternoon! In addition , if, by chance, the boardwalk is rather "closed-up" we (the st

NJ Trip update:

Weather update and "possible" adjustments to itinerary... #1  As of 10:00 AM on Thursd ay, Oct. 1st - the SATURDAY forecast for Randolph, NJ calls for some rain in the AM, then mostly cloudy in the afternoon and evening. #2  The forecast for Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ on Sunday, Oct. 4th calls for  cloudy skies and some wind. #3  The forecast for Point Pleasant Beach for Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 4th calls for partly cloudy skies and windy. Obviously weather forecasts change every few hours, but at this time it looks as if all of our previously arranged plans are a go.  Please know, however, that in the event of rain and /or other than less than ideal weather conditions, the itinerary could and most likely would be adjusted as late as the morning of an event to include other great venues in the NY/NJ area, keeping our group protected and away from any bad weather. In regards to the developing hurricane, there are so many paths it could take once hitting th

Middle and High School Music Department Handbook

This year, in a desire to go digital and create less of a paper mess at the beginning of the year, we decided to try electronically sharing the Music Department handbook. By following the link below you will have access to all of our rules, regulations, and policies, as well as information about concert dress, a calendar of our events, etc. All students involved in the music department and at least one Parent/Guardian, are required to review the handbook. On the final page there is a link to an online form where you will electronically sign that you have reviewed the materials and agreed to them. All responses will generate an electronic, time-stamped form so that we can keep track of who has read and agreed. Please review the handbook and fill out the form by Friday September 4, 2015  If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! We look forward to getting back into the swing of things! The last day of band camp was originally scheduled for Monday, August 24th .  We (the staff) has just leaned that we need to be a part of an "in-service day" from 8-3 on that day. To make up the time lost we have re-scheduled a shorter practice on: Monday, August 24 from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Although the first day of school is Thursday, August 27th, because we have our first "home" football game on the 2nd day of school, we will practice on:   Wednesday, August 26th from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. We are asking band members to please work with the staff and re-arrange their schedules so they can be present at these practices. As previously scheduled, marching band practices during the fall season will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 - 4:30 PM.   All new members should be aware that all practices and performances are mandatory! Thanks Everyone!

We need You!

We are in need of volunteers to pull the instrument trailer this season. This is not an all or nothing sign up, there may be more than one person who pulls the trailer throughout the season.  There are 10 games, two parades and a festival that we will be performing this season. We ask that the person pulling the trailer be at the school at least a half an hour before our departing time to make sure we have everything loaded in a timely manner. Those times will change with each game/event, depending on the distance traveled.  Also, because of the amount of instruments we need to take with us, we may need to use the bed or trunk of the vehicle to carry instruments as well. Here is a link to the Trailer Pulling Sign Up Sheet. Please put your name and number in the slot you'd like to volunteer for. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tor2l9cXn9ve54pXhHAzJ9MJfTq-uo2uYIHuCioY8CY/edit If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Teschler at anne.teschler@centerburgschools.org

IMPORTANT CONCERT DATE CHANGE!!!!

High School Students and Families Because of a scheduling conflict with the High School Mid Ohio Athletic Conference track preliminaries we need to make a switch in concert dates. There are many high school students involved in both music and track and we would like for them to be involved in both events that week. This means that the: High School Band/Choir Concert will now be MAY 13 @ 7:00 pm in conjunction with the 7th & 8th Grade Concert We are sorry if this causes confusion, and understand that this may, in turn, cause some other conflicts. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Dettmar or Mrs. Culbertson. Thanks for all that you do to support our program and we look forward to seeing you there!
